Serendipity ~Free Pattern~

Serendipity means a fortunate accident. Something that was not suppose to happen but did anyway and is better than intended. **side note:** I highly recommend the movie Serendipity…..very good!

When I first started envisioning another hat to knit, I pictured a nice thick button band, 2×2 ribbing (because I love 2×2 ribbing for hats), buttons, and a slouchy style. Instead, my hands knitted something completely different but superior to what I had visioned.

Serendipitiy is a simple hat pattern with a nice thick 2×2 ribbed band, buttons, puckering at the top, and super comfortable. While this hat did not turn out exactly as intended, I love it even more. Made from a wool alpaca blend yarn, it is sure to keep your noggin warm all through the cold Ohio winters.

Materials:

*Stitch Nation Alpaca Love in Espresso Bean (80% wool, 20% alpaca) 132 yds.
*16″ circulars in US size 7 and 8
* Size 8 DPNs
*2 buttons (size is personal choice – between 3/4″ and 1″ should be suitable – you be the judge)
*Stitch markers
*Yarn Needle for seaming

Gauge: 4.5 sts = 1″ on size 8 needles

Disclaimer: The small print that nobody wants to read but you really should because there is valuable information. DO NOT!!! Sell this pattern, it is my pattern and will bring you bad karma if you do sell this pattern (besides, not cool to pass off someone else’ work as your own). However, and this is where the fun is, you have my blessing to sell items made from this pattern. As a “thank you” for taking time to enjoy my pattern, and for your hard work.

Pattern is 2 pages long and set up so the actual pattern is on the second page with no photos (you may thank Leethal for this wonderful idea!!) to save printer ink as well as paper.

(because my big baby that we call a dog feels left out sometimes)

Weekend Head Warmer ~Free Pattern~

I have been knitting hats non-stop for my shameless self promotion bit and, in doing so, I would love to start adding some knitting patterns to my blog. When I normally work on something sans pattern, I jot down little notes.

Notes not even long enough to fit on the back of a movie stub ticket. CO…work….BO

Yet, somehow I always manage to remember exactly what I have done, how many rows I have done it for, etc.

This evening I decided that I would turn my latest creation into an actual written out pattern and post to Ravelry (my first time, I think I screwed something up but nothing is right your first time).

It is funny how my little notes can get written into a full length 3 page pattern, (hopefully) well written enough for a beginner knitter to understand.

I have had this idea thrumming around in my head for quite sometime of working up a hat pattern incorporating the basket weave stitch. Simplicity has always been my forte and I like the look of the basket weave stitch. So finally I was able to sit down and fully write out my notes into an actual user friendly pattern. After much (and I do mean much…helps if you let people know what yarn and needle sizes you used) editing to one simple “offering free of charge” hat pattern and I was finally able to add it to Ravelry’s database.

The pattern is simple enough that anyone wanting to begin making hand knitted hats can as well as mindless enough for adventurous knitters to make.

A simple hat pattern, cup of coffee, and a movie is basically all I need for a great relaxing evening.

Yarn: Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick in Charcoal
Needles: 16″ circulars in US Sizes 11 & Sizes 13  as well as US Size 13 DPNs
Size: To fit adults heads ranging from 20″ to 22″
A movie (optional)

Edited to add: The pdf pattern is 3 pages long but set up so the actual pattern is on the third page. To save printer ink as well as paper.

The super bulky yarn combined with simple knit and purl stitches makes for a very easy pattern yet stylish enough to wear all weekend long. The basket weave stitch adds to the scrunchability and slouchyness of the hat.

P.S. As a little “thank you” for enjoying my pattern, you have my blessing to sell the item(s) you make from the pattern. Not the pattern itself, that’s bad karma.

shameless self promotion

A while ago I had met a friend of a friend. Two super awesome gals that were opening their own shop in the Art District of Downtown Canton. James and I have been going to First Friday which is basically an art festival and so much fun! Many different artist selling their works and tons of amazing food!

This friend of a friend that I met found out that I knitted and wanted some hand knit hats for sale in her shop. I squeed at the chance and have been working on hats non-stop. Hats have always been my favorite projects to make and it has been fun playing around with colors I do not normally use as well as push myself to step away from using a pattern. Luckily though I have made enough hats that I can make them without a pattern, but still, it is hard for me to debate whether something is going to fit right without having the person in front of me.

(notes on this hat above are on my Ravelry page)

These are just a few that have been flying off my needles. The last one (pictured above) is my favorite. As I said, it is great working with colors I do not normally work with (like black) and trying to invent new ways to create hand knitted hats.

The up side is that I do not write down my patterns. When I make the girls’ hats I write down sizes, how many stitches, and any other pattern notes. But because these hats are “play by ear” (except the purple mistake rib hat that one I want to re-create in many different colors) each one will be different from the next. Making them 100% truly original handmade knitted hats.

And when I came back home from dropping the kids off at school, I noticed somebunny got into my knitting basket.

The photo made Miss L. day. Crazy how bored I get with no kids home now.

keep knitting

Another knitting post….seems like a lot of those are going to be happening.

I cannot put down my needles though.

I realized that being “multicrafty” is a little exhausting and so I spent some time last year realizing which craft or fiber art, as it be, that I really love….that I cannot live without….that I plan and literally dream about.

Knitting was the one that made the cut.

So with that I cranked out two more knitting projects into the FO pile.

A hat for Miss K…..

My girls have become huge Harry Potter fans within the past year (Prisoner of Azkaban is my fave) so when I found the cable eyelet hat pattern that Hermione was wearing in Half Blood Prince I knew one of my girlies would love a hat made for her. Thing 1 was the one that took up the offer and using Malabrigo Worsted I knew that this hat would be one of her faves.

(completely staged photo but I love it!)

Pattern: Hermione’s Cable & Eyelet Hat by JL Yarnworks
Yarn: Malabrigo Worsted in Lettuce (do not know how much yardage but I have a nice chunk left over)
Needles: Size 5 (really wish I would have used a smaller size needle or casted on fewer stitches for ribbing as the cabling seems to make the 2×2 ribbing bow out – lesson learned)
Mods: Used long tail cast on and 2×2 ribbing
Notes: This hat is beautiful!!! Miss K absolutely loves it and wears it everyday. Her friends at school were jealous that her Mom can knit and make “Harry Potter stuff”. Totally worth it to make this pattern! This is by far the most favorite thing I have ever made for her….or so I’ve been told.

The other project is a cardigan for my brother’s baby that is soon to be born.

My brother is a huge Ohio State Buckeyes fan (I’m noticing a pattern with these two projects) and as soon as he told me that him and my sister in law were pregnant the next words out of his mouth were

(and I quote) “So, you think you can knit up my baby some Ohio State stuff?”

Would absolutely love to my dear brother.

It is so wee little, took no time at all, and only used roughly a half a skein of each color to knit up. The buttons are sewed on really (really) good and I cannot wait to place this on my baby nephew.

Found the cutest little football buttons at JoAnns.

The cardigan is so wee little….I do not remember babes being that little. And yet I know it will still be a bit too big for my little nephew when he is born.

Pattern: Baby Sweater on Two Needles by Elizabeth Zimmermannn (omitting the lace pattern obviously)
Source: Knitter’s Almanac
Yarn: Lion Brand Wool Ease in Grey Heather and Ranch Red
Needles: Size 5
Mods: None.
Notes: Now my brother wants me to make a Jim Tressel Sweater Vest
